Arrest Records in Salt Lake County
Many agencies can make arrests in Salt Lake County. The list includes the Sheriff, Unified Police, Salt Lake City Police, West Valley City Police, West Jordan Police, Utah Highway Patrol, University of Utah Police, UTA Police, and other local departments. The agency that made the arrest keeps its own incident or arrest report. If the person entered county custody, Sheriff corrections creates the booking record. These documents describe related events but do not share the same custodian.
An arrest record can describe the legal basis, time, place, agency, officer, alleged offenses, probable-cause account, evidence, and destination. The booking adds jail intake details, charges or holds recorded at that time, custody location, and release information. A prosecutor then decides what to file. The court record tracks the filed case and its outcome. This sequence explains why the initial Salt Lake County arrest charge may differ from the case disposition.
Salt Lake County Arrest Booking Facilities
Salt Lake County runs two jail facilities through the Sheriff's Corrections Bureau. Metro Jail is the principal intake and secure detention site. Oxbow Jail supports lower-security custody and programming. A searcher should use official prisoner information to confirm custody rather than infer location from the arresting city. Facility assignment can change, and the jail address does not identify the agency that wrote the arrest report.
Metro Jail is at 3415 South 900 West in Salt Lake City and serves as the principal intake and secure detention facility. Oxbow Jail, at 3148 South 1100 West, supports lower-security and program-related custody. Those addresses help identify the facility, but neither location replaces the prisoner search when a housing assignment may have changed.
The official Metro Jail facility page provides the source view below.
Metro's intake role makes it central to recent county booking records, but it is not the records counter for every police report.
The Oxbow Jail facility page documents the county's second jail.
Oxbow and Metro are parts of the same county corrections system, while state custody remains a separate UDC responsibility.
Salt Lake County Arrest Lookups
No single official search produces a complete Salt Lake County arrest history. Begin with the source closest to the event, then use the other channels to answer different questions. Keep names, dates, locations, booking or incident numbers, and the arresting agency ready.
- Check Salt Lake County prisoner information for current or recent county custody. Search by first and last name or by booking number, permanent number, or state ID.
- Contact corrections by its official phone or counter route if the online tool fails. For releasable booking material not shown online, submit a narrow Sheriff GRAMA request.
- Request the arrest narrative from the agency that created it. The Sheriff cannot provide an SLCPD or West Valley City police report merely because a booking later occurred at county jail.
- Search Utah Courts Xchange across District and Justice Court scopes for filed charges. Very recent arrests may not yet have a case.
- For your own fingerprint-associated Utah history, use BCI Right of Access. Use UDC Offender Search only for state incarceration or current probation or parole, not unsentenced county-jail custody.

Its name and identifier modes help distinguish a current custody search from a request for a full police narrative or statewide record.
Salt Lake County Arrest Report Custodians
The arresting agency owns its report even when the Sheriff owns the related jail booking. A narrow request should name the event date, location, report number if known, record type, and desired format. Active-investigation, victim, juvenile, medical, witness, tactical, and private details may be withheld or redacted under GRAMA and other law.
| Agency | Official route | Record to request |
|---|---|---|
| Salt Lake County Sheriff | Sheriff GRAMA channel | Sheriff arrest report or county booking and jail record |
| Salt Lake City Police | SLCPD GRAMA | SLCPD incident, arrest, initial-contact, log, or releasable photo record |
| West Valley City Police | City police records | West Valley City-created report |
| West Jordan Police | City police route | West Jordan-created report |
| Utah Highway Patrol | Utah DPS GRAMA channel | Highway Patrol arrest or crash record |
Other possible custodians include Unified Police, University of Utah Police, and UTA Police. The arrest location and responding unit help identify the correct office.
Arrest Records: What They Contain
A public Salt Lake County arrest or booking entry may show enough information to locate the event, but it will not expose every fact collected during intake or investigation. Medical screening, custody-security details, full personal identifiers, and protected victim information should not be expected in the public view.
| Incident or Booking Number | Links the request to an agency report or jail intake event. |
|---|---|
| Date, Time, and Location | Places the arrest and booking in sequence and helps narrow a records request. |
| Arresting Agency | Identifies the report custodian and the unit responsible for the arrest. |
| Arrest or Booking Charges | Shows allegations recorded at that point, which can change during prosecutor screening. |
| Authority and Narrative | May describe a warrant, probable cause, witnesses, evidence, and circumstances, subject to redaction. |
| Bond and Holds | May list release terms, a hold, or status as reported by corrections or the court. |
| Custody or Release Status | Shows the facility or release information available in the current record. |
Booking photographs are part of jail intake, but this arrest page does not republish them or serve as a gallery. Ask the official custodian what is public in a specific releasable record.
Salt Lake County Booking Charges Change
An officer records offenses believed at arrest. Jail staff then enter the charges and holds supplied for booking. The Salt Lake County District Attorney or another prosecutor reviews the evidence and decides whether to file, amend, or decline charges. The filed court counts may therefore be narrower, broader, or differently classified than the booking list. A case can also end in dismissal or acquittal.
Record flow: Arrest Report › Jail Booking › Prosecutor Screening › Court Filing › Disposition
Use the Court Case Lookup for filed charges, pleas, motions, and final disposition. Keep the arrest and court records separate when reviewing your own history. A favorable court result does not retroactively mean the arrest or booking never occurred.
Recent Salt Lake County Bookings
The county prisoner-information search is the official route for current and recent Salt Lake County custody. Its form supports first and last name or an identifier such as booking number, permanent number, or state ID. An “Include Released Inmates” control can broaden the query. Live result fields must be read as custody data, not as a complete arrest history.
No result has many possible causes. The person may have been released, transferred, cited without booking, entered under a spelling variation, or never held by the county. A very recent event may not yet be visible. A historic arrest can also fall outside the tool's practical window. Follow with the arresting agency, Sheriff records request, and court search rather than treating absence as proof.
Note: The county roster can change throughout the day, so confirm urgent custody or release questions through official corrections channels.
County Arrest Search or UDC
Salt Lake County prisoner information and the UDC Offender Search answer different questions. The county tool covers people in current or recent local jail custody. UDC searches people incarcerated by the state or currently on adult probation or parole. UDC expressly excludes unsentenced people awaiting trial in county jails. Federal custody follows the separate Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator.
Use county prisoner information for pretrial or other local jail custody. Use UDC for state imprisonment and for a public adult probation or parole status. Neither locator serves as a historic police-report archive; that older narrative stays with the arresting agency and may require GRAMA. This division prevents a false no-record conclusion when the first system was never meant to hold the requested item.
The official UDC Offender Search page provides the state locator view shown here.
Legal custodian matters more than the building's location because state-supervised people can be housed through county arrangements.
Salt Lake County Arrest GRAMA Requests
Use GRAMA when the public roster does not supply a releasable booking record or when the Sheriff created the underlying incident report. Utah law ordinarily requires a response as soon as reasonably possible and within ten business days. That is a response period, not a promise of completed copies. A five-business-day route requires a showing that faster access benefits the public rather than only the requester.
Make the request narrow. State the date range, location, incident or booking number, specific record, and preferred electronic format. The agency may grant access, deny with a classification and legal basis, say it lacks the record, or cite extraordinary circumstances with an estimated response date. Reasonable duplication and compilation fees may apply under GRAMA.
Salt Lake County Sheriff
Use the official Sheriff GRAMA request route for Sheriff-created arrest, booking, jail, and administrative records. Confirm the current administrative counter before travel.
The Metro Jail is a custody facility, not automatically the counter for report copies. A municipal police report must go to that city department.
Arrest Records vs Conviction Records
Salt Lake County arrest records and conviction records come from different decisions. An officer's arrest and a jail booking show that an event occurred. A conviction requires a court judgment after a plea or trial. BCI may later connect fingerprint-supported arrest and reported outcome information, but reporting and identity matching can cause gaps.
| Arrest Record | Conviction Record |
|---|---|
| Created by the arresting agency and, after intake, the jail | Created through the prosecutor's filing and court judgment |
| Shows arrest or booking, not guilt | Shows a judicial finding or qualifying plea |
| Held by police, Sheriff corrections, and sometimes BCI | Held by the court clerk and reported to BCI |
| May end in release, no filing, dismissal, or acquittal | May lead to sentence, appeal, probation, or expungement |
Note: An arrest is not proof of guilt, and a booking charge may never become a filed or convicted offense.
If your own BCI history lacks a known disposition, obtain the court document and use the official BCI record-challenge process. Utah lists Right of Access and challenge procedures through the Bureau of Criminal Identification.
